Customer – Tata Steel
Project - 96” Coke Oven Gas Main
Introduction
The project was high profile and one of the first of its kind undertaken by Tata Steel. The work involved the removal of a 96” orifice plate and associated instrumentation.
Details
The 96” Coke Oven gas main was a critical part of the operation supplying gas to the 2 number Hotmill Reheat Furnaces. The work was planned over a 72 hour shutdown period working days and nights. The task involved the parting of the existing 96” flanges using a highly sophisticated jacking system to allow the orifice plate to be removed. This also involved the removal and reinstallation of structural steelwork sections. The orifice plate was then transported to Tata Steel workshops for inspection, and reinstated on completion.
Successes
With our supervision and onsite working parties, the task was a complete success which allowed the gas flow to be more efficient. The work was completed 18 hours ahead of schedule. Due to the success of the project, similar tasks have been carried out on other areas of the plant to improve the efficiency of the gas flow.
